FreeReading is an open-source instructional program that helps educators teach early literacy. Because it is open-source, it represents the collective wisdom of a wide community of teachers and researchers. FreeReading contains a 40-week scope and sequence of phonological awareness and phonics activities that can support and supplement a typical kindergarten or first grade core or basal program.
This is a free, open-source (free in cost and copyright) reading intervention program for grades K-1 it was developed by instructional designers from WirelessGeneration, working with teachers from around the country. The core curriculum materials that reside at the FreeReading site are “locked” to prevent changes but educators are encouraged to add and edit a variety of supplementary lessons and activities and allowed to redistribute the content under an Attribution, Share Alike license that permits changes in order to create derivative works.The state of Florida recently approved FreeReading as a supplemental reading program that state schools may use during the 2008-2009 school year.
